Since it’s release, I’ve had mixedfeelings towards the authenticity behind rapper ’360′s’ YouTube video titled ‘message to everyone’.
I can sort-of-kind-of see that he is trying to do the right thing by raising awareness about depression and other mental health issues but has no one really given him their honest opinion? Or am I the only soul who thinks he definitely could have gone about it a lot better – if not have done the video at all.
O’Sister by City And Colour loudly plays in the background as the recording starts, almost instantaneously setting the shit mood and giving us all a heads up that this is going to get awkward.
Within the first minute of the recording he explains that his Fiancé, Crystal, had a friend who had ‘Hung Herself’ and from this extremely unfortunate situation, Crystal ‘Got incredibly fucked up’ and ‘Was a total mess’. He goes on to further explain that another one of Crystals friends had hung herself. He shed’s some light on the effects this has had on his Fiancé, That she has trouble sleeping and dealing with nightmares and also boldly stating that ‘She’s a fucking mess’.
He continues rambling on about how he has had to visit the doctor with Crystal ‘Like a million times’ then continues to choke (similar to his choking technique during the battle against Canadian rapper Kid Twist) and starts to tear up. Once again the heavily tatted rapper exhales and ends with “She’s completely fucked at the moment”. This is how Australians are being portrayed via the web?! Dude! Seriously…After that Knifey-Spoony episode of ‘The Simpsons’ how much more taunting can we take?
I understand that he has built a large fan base in Australia, mainly consisting of teenagers and that he wants to make people aware that there is help for those struggling with mental health issues such as depression and anxiety, What I don’t understand is exactly how he has worded things during the video and why, as a rapper, didn’t he use his platinum declared talent to make it a little bit less obscene and a little bit more discreet and respectful.
Through out the entire video he stop and starts, chokes, ALMOST starts crying but shows no signs of tears, says fuck a lot and, if anything, makes the video out to be more of an emotional venting system rather than an awareness issue.
Not to mention the realms of rap battle hilarity that have been completely dragged open thanks to 360’s ‘message to everyone’. This video has enough verbal bitch slap material for any rapper to call it ‘game, set, match’.
No apologies here though! I commend the guy for trying to make a difference and completely understand his point of view although it’s a use of disrespectful and obscene dialogue and lack of decent vocabulary in regards to his Fiancé’s mental state as well as mental health issues in general.
